Frailty, Sarcopenia, and Fall Risk Assessment (FSFRA)

Geriatric Care Center

About Frailty, Sarcopenia, and Fall Risk Assessment (FSFRA)

Our department has established a Geriatric Medical Care Center within the Geriatric Clinic. The center provides screening services including Frailty, Sarcopenia, and Fall Risk Assessment and Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA). The following section introduces FSFRA.

1. Assessment Overview

Health issues

Healthcare needs

Complex and multiple healthcare needs

Require proactive comprehensive geriatric assessment

Prone to frailty and disability due to illness

Treatment should be based on assessment, aiming at functional recovery and quality of life

Why Screening Is Needed

  1. Frailty and sarcopenia are signs of geriatric syndromes

  2. Frailty may cause falls, delirium, disability, hospitalization, institutionalization, and mortality

Sarcopenia:

loss of skeletal muscle mass and function

Early screening (age ≥70) is highly recommended. Interventions (exercise, nutrition, cognitive training) can delay or reverse frailty

2. Purpose of the Assessment

Confirm diagnosis of frailty and sarcopenia

Initiate early education and exercise interventions

  • Assess body composition and physical fitness

  • Safe, simple, and low-cost screening methods

Improve strength and balance to prevent falls and delay disability
