1.Mission and Philosophy

To meet the demands of a rapidly aging society, the department is committed to providing high-quality, integrated, and holistic medical care, while also promoting education, research, and clinical services in geriatric medicine.

First attending physician in geriatric medicine appointed, launching elderly care services

2002

Geriatric Acute Care Ward established

2008

Certified as a geriatric specialty training hospital

2014

Elder-friendly acute ward "Qi Yi Yuan" inaugurated

2016

Certified as an age-friendly healthcare institution

2017

Geriatric Assessment and Consultation Clinic launched

2019

Department of Geriatrics and Gerontology officially established

2022

Geriatric Medicine Discipline to move into new medical building


3.Clinical Care Highlights                                                                                                                                                                               

Established Taiwan's first geriatric medical ward, offering Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) and Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) care.

Ward design emphasizes barrier-free layout, nostalgic corridors, rehabilitation corners, and social sunrooms, promoting cognitive and functional support.

Collaborates with Family Medicine, Psychiatry, and Rehabilitation departments for integrated interdepartmental care.

Focuses on discharge planning and community linkage, ensuring continuity of care from hospital to home.

 


4.Academic Development & Talent Cultivation


(1)The newly established Department of Geriatrics and Gerontology, School of Medicine will offer:

  • Geriatric Medicine

  • Long-Term Care

  • Translational Medicine

  • Palliative Care

  • Healthy Aging

(2)A planned Geriatric Medicine Research Center will focus on:

  1. Geriatric training and workforce development

  2. Development of assistive technologies and geriatric medical devices

  3. Integrated care systems connecting hospitals and communities

At least three full-time faculty will be appointed, working closely with internal and external partners to promote teaching and research.


5.Vision and Social Responsibility

NCKU aims to become a leading hub for geriatric medicine and education in Asia.Educating geriatric professionals with interdisciplinary skills, cultural competence, and empathy.Actively responding to the healthcare and caregiving demands of Taiwan’s super-aged society.
